Dengue Prevention through Mosquito Control

The government of Jamaica has been undertaking an all-island campaign to control the mosquito population to prevent the spread of Dengue Fever. For example, they’ve increased fogging in certain areas, and they have even released fish in gullies in an attempt to kill the mosquito larvae. But, their dengue prevention efforts can only be successful if we as residents and business owners also play our part in controlling the mosquito population.

There is no vaccine or medicine to treat dengue. Therefore, it is important that we control the mosquito population and prevent mosquito bites.

How to prevent the spread of the mosquito that causes Dengue

The best way to prevent the spread of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito is to control mosquitoes inside and outside our homes and businesses. These mosquitoes are also responsible for the Zika virus and Chick-V. We have to target them at all stages of their life cycle and prevent them from breeding inside buildings and outside on your properties.

Dengue Prevention through knowing the life cycle of a mosquito

To prevent the spread of Dengue, we have to start checking for standing water where mosquitoes can lay their eggs. So, regularly clean your flower pots and vases to kill any mosquito eggs and larvae. Check your yard for containers, blocked drains, traps etc. that may be holding standing water that can allow mosquito eggs to hatch.

After cleaning up all these issues, ensure that the adult mosquitoes are also taken care of. Mosquito fogging is the best way to kill adult mosquitoes. If there isn’t public fogging in your area, then you can arrange for independent fogging of your homes, communities, apartment complexes, and business places.

Dengue prevention 101: Avoid Dengue by preventing mosquito bites

Next in the fight against the spread of Dengue is avoiding mosquito bites. So, to avoid Dengue, you need to protect yourself from the bite of an Aedes Aegypti mosquito. You can easily do this by using insect repellent and wearing long pants and long-sleeved clothing. For mosquito repellents, it is recommended that you get ones that have DEET. Follow the product instructions on how to apply and reapply the repellent.

You can consider installing screens on your windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes entering your home. Sleeping under a mosquito net will protect you from bites from those that do get in your home. And where you can, arrange for mosquito fogging at your business place or community from independent pest control professionals.

So, take action now. Clean up your area and get professional help for mosquito control.
