Ants - Pests

What are Ants?

Ants are one of the most common and prevalent of household pests.  Classified as queens, males or workers (the latter being exclusively females), ants live in colonies comprising thousands of individual ants. There are thousands of species of ants, and some are more disruptive than others. Some of the most common ants in Jamaica are the Argentine, Black house, Sugar and Carpenter ants.

Ants as a whole are beneficial to humans, in that their burrowing in the soil helps to aerate the soil and some feed on certain crop pests. The colonies are normally located outdoors.

Why are they pests?

Ants invade the home, burrow into and infest food items. Apart from being a nuisance, depending on the type of ants, they may eat through your clothes, other fabric material, and wooden items in your home.

Are they dangerous?

One of the most dangerous species of ants is the Carpenter ant. Though they do not eat wood as termites do, they can cause significant damage to wooden structures and furniture as they tunnel into them to make their nests.

Why do I have them?

Depending on the type of ant, they will feed on dead and living insects, sweet foods, leftovers, grease, seeds etc. They invade any premises that can provide them with water and food.

Where are they found/how do I know that I have an ant infestation?

Outwardly visible signs of general ant infestations include sightings of ant trails or infested food items etc. Signs of carpenter ant invasions includes small pieces of sawdust or debris.

How can I prevent them?

To prevent ant infestations, it is recommended that you keep your homes clean, wipe up spills as they occur and keep foods in ant-proof containers. One should also seal crevices and cracks to prevent entry.

How do I get rid of them?

The most effective method for controlling ants is to prevent them from entering the home which unfortunately is not that easy. Home remedies do not account for the various types and behaviours of ants and are therefore not as effective as targeted pest control treatments delivered by a professional.

Killing just the ants that are seen will not take care of the problem. You have to track them back to their nests and eradicate the nest for lasting relief from ants. Carpenter ants are also one of the most difficult ants to treat. Sometimes it will take multiple treatments to completely eradicate them.

Similar to RYMO, a true professional pest control company should provide treatment based on the type of ants in the facility.
