Fly - Pest

What are they?

Belonging to the order Diptera, meaning two wings, there are approximately 120,000 species of flies across the world. They are categorized as filth flies, biting flies, small flies, gnats and overwintering flies. Most of them are considered ‘filth flies’ because they frequent filth areas and can spread diseases.  Two of the flies commonly seen in Jamaica house flies and fruit flies.

Why are they pests?

Flies reproduce exceptionally fast. One pair of flies is able to produce more than one million offspring in as little as eight weeks, with eggs maturing to adults in just seven days.

Are they dangerous?

They frequent filth areas and can, therefore, spread diseases. They contaminate food by transporting diseases on their bodies or by vomiting on the food.

House flies have been associated with the spread of many microbial pathogens such as E. ColiStaphylococcusSalmonella, and Shigella. They are also connected with the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, hepatitis, tuberculosis, infantile diarrhoea, among others.

Why do I have them?

House flies are attracted to decaying meat and faeces while fruit flies (small flies) are attracted to more sweet substances such as overripe fruit, spilt drinks etc.

Where are they found/how do I know that I have a fly infestation?

An infestation is easily noticeable as you will see a lot of flies in the vicinity. Maggots can indicate the potential for an infestation as maggots are flies in their larval stage.

How can I prevent them?

Good sanitation practices go a long way in eliminating flies. Clearing up debris and maintaining a clean garbage disposal area will limit the number of flies attracted. Screens on windows and doors will also prevent access to the home.

How do I get rid of them?

There are several do-it-yourself options available for dealing with flies. Unfortunately, they are not built to deal with an infestation and will not be effective enough to keep the flies away for a long period of time. A pest control company such as Rymo would, however, be able to efficiently eradicate an infestation and prevent them from returning.
